Every five minutes a new race opens with the same six horses. Back any of them with one or more tickets, in one transaction. 80% of every ticket goes into that race's pool; 20% buys $DERBY and burns it.
When the gate closes, the winner is drawn from the hash of a block that doesn't exist yet, so nobody can know it in advance. Every horse is 1 in 6. The race is then run on this page, and everyone sees the same finish.
Everyone who backed the winner splits the whole pool by tickets, paid straight to their wallet. The fewer people on your horse, the bigger your share.
If nobody backed the winner, the whole pool rolls into the next race. Races nobody bets on are skipped. The pool is never seeded.
A keeper runs each race within seconds of the close, and anyone can do it with the button. There's no owner and no switches in the contract.
